 Two types of coffee that are commonly grown: ROBUSTA & LIBERICA
 Based on Khazanah Research Institute

i. In Malaysia the coffee production is only 3,369 metric tonnes (MT) in 2018 and
mostly cultivated in Sabah and Johor.

ii. Coffee planters face challenges such as competition with other cash crops and high
production cost which lead in decline of production for 16% per year. This occur
between 2010 to 2018.

3. PROJECT PROPOSAL
a) Project site

 The proposed site is 100 acres of land , part of the Conifer Forest Reserve in Janda baik, which
is under the administration of the Forestry Department.
 suitable for this project because of its location on Titiwangsa range of peninsular Malaysia.
 The area is a mountainous terrain where the altitudes ranges between 600m (2000ft) and
800m(2600ft) above sea level.
 The climate is classified as tropical and rainfall is significant in this area throughout the year.
3. PROJECT PROPOSAL
 Details of the weather conditions in Janda Baik as based on Koppen-Geiger climate classification
system:
i. Daytime temperature = 27.8 C and falls between 25 C and 28 C
ii. Evenings can drop to 22 C
iii. Yearly rainfall is 2,938 mm(115.7 in)
iv. Precipitation is lowest in July, with an average of 132 mm(5.2 in)
v. The most precipitation fall in November with an average of 391 mm (15.4in)
vi. June is the hottest month of the year with an average temperature of 28.7 C
vii. December has the lowest average temperature of the year 27.1 C.
viii. The climatic factors as well as the soil type of the area is very suitable for agriculture in general
and for the cultivation of coffee.
3. PROJECT PROPOSAL
b) Farming Practices
i. Coffee cultivation

 Temperature and rainfall conditions are two main determinants of coffee yield
 The optimum temperature range for Arabica and Robusta is somewhere between 18 C and 23 C.
 Higher Temperatures have a negative impact on both yield and quality
 Above 23 C, the development and ripening cherries are accelerated, often leading to loss of
quality.
 Continuous exposure to daily temperatures as high as 30 C could result not only reduced growth
but also abnormalities such as yellowing of leaves
3. PROJECT PROPOSAL
ii. Agroforestry

 The model of the proposed project is based on agroforestry technique where coffee integrates
with the existing conifer trees.
 There will be no felling of the existing conifer trees
 Coffee with agroforestry will provide ;

 Lower temperature due to Shade from the trees reduce temperatures by 3 to 5°C

 Erosion control due to as coffee planting requires the existing top soil

 Increase of carbon sink where one hectare of coffee will store 5X the amount of one hectares
forest thus increase the generation of oxygen

 Additional tourist attraction of Janda Baik for coffee and forest education by creating a coffee
tourism plot. This also will promote a bird migration to Janda Baik.
