MATHEMATICS 10

Teacher Leah
10. Geometric Sequences – each
term found by multiplying the
previous term by the same number
Examples:
1, 2, 4, 8, 16, …
6, 12, 24, 48,…
1, 5, 25, 125, 625
11. Common Ratio – constant multiplier
- to find the common ratio divide the second term
by the first term and so on.
Example:
Find the next three terms of the sequence 6, 12, 24,
48,…
r = 12/6=24/12=48/24= 2
48 x 2 = 96
96 x 2 = 192
192 x 2 = 384
Therefore, the next three terms are 96, 192, 384.
12. Formula for the nth term of
Geometric Sequence:
where
a. Write the first five terms of a
geometric sequence where

Therefore, 8, 24, 72, 216, 648

b. Find the 11th term of the geometric sequence -40,
20, -10, 5, …

n = 11
13. Geometric Means – the terms between
any two given terms of a geometric
sequence.
Find the 2 geometric means between 1 and 8.
Solution:
a. Arrange the sequence: 8

b. Solve for common ratio:

r=2
