MATHEMATICS 10

Teacher Leah
LESSON 1:
SEQUENCES

Definition of Terms:
1. Sequences – succession of numbers in a
specific order
Examples:
1, 3, 5, 7, 9, …
4, 9, 16, 25, …
-2, 4, -8, …, -2048, 4096
2. Term – it is called by each number in a
sequence and formed according to some fixed
rule or property and they are arranged as the first
term, the second term, the third term and so on.
3. Finite Sequence – a sequence with a definite
numbers of terms and the first and the last terms are
clearly identifies.
Examples:
1, 2, 3, 4, 5
38, 33, 28, 18, 13
-2, 4, -8, …, -2048, 4096
4. Infinite Sequence – a sequence with no
definite number of terms
Examples:
-9, -2, 5, 12, 19, …
27, 9, 3, 1, 1/3, 1/9, …
½, ¼, 1/6, 1/8, …
5. Arithmetic Sequence – a sequence in which
the difference between any two consecutive
terms is the same.
Examples:
21, 31, 41, 51, …
28, 24, 20, 16, …
54, 51, 48, 45,42, …
6. Common Difference – constant difference in
arithmetic sequence and denoted by d.
Examples:
a. 21, 31, 41, 51, …
d = 31 – 21 = 41 – 31, = 51 – 41 = 10
b. 54, 51, 48, 45, 42
d = 51 – 54 = 48 – 51, 48 – 51 = 45 – 48 =
42 – 45= -3
7. Formula for nth term of Arithmetic
Sequence: , where
A. WRITE THE NEXT THREE TERMS OF
THE SEQUENCE 7, 5, 3, 1, -1, …

d = 5 – 7 = 3 – 5 = 1 – 3 = -1 – 1 = -2
B. FIND THE 12TH TERM OF THE
ARITHMETIC SEQUENCE 3, 5, 7, 9,

Using the formula

= , , n = 12, d = 5-3=7-5=9-7=2
8. Arithmetic Means – the terms of an
arithmetic sequence that are between
two given terms.
a. In the arithmetic sequence, 5, 8, 11, 14, 17,
there are three arithmetic means between 5
and 17 this are 8, 11, 14
b. Insert three arithmetic means between 17
and 1.
Solution:
1. Arrange the form in arithmetic manner.
17,
2. Find the common difference (d),

4d = -17+1
4d = -16
d = -4
3. Solve for the arithmetic means
9. Arithmetic Series – an expression denoting
the sum of the terms of an arithmetic sequence.
a. - used when the first term, the nth term
and the number of terms are known
b. – used when the first term, the number of
terms and the common difference are
known
FIND

Solution:

365
b.

( 10 + (-63)
