Murphy's Law
If you change queues in a supermarket, what
will happen? The queue you were in before
will move more quickly. You know what will
happen, because there's a law of life that
says, "if something bad can happen, it will
happen". It's called Murphy's Law, and it
took its name from Captain Edward Murphy,
an American aeroplane engineer from the
1940s.
He was investigating why planes crashed, and
not surprisingly, he got a reputation for
always thinking of the worst thing that can
happen in every situation...
he/she'll wake up early you'll need it later there'll be a lot of traffic

it will be delayed they won't like you you'll see a parking space very near
your boss will arrive early a lot of people will ring you
1. If you're single and you meet somebody you really like, _____________________________

2. If you throw something away,  ___________________________________

3. If you park a long way from where you're going, ___________________________________

4. If your baby goes to sleep late,  ___________________________________

5.If you're driving somewhere and you're in  hurry,  ________________________________

6. If you arrive very early to catch a plane,  ___________________________________

7. If you get to work late,  ___________________________________

8. If you leave your mobile phone at home, ___________________________________

WITH BRITISH

GO
You will have bad luck if a black
cat crosses your path.

FALS
TRUE
E

Well, confusingly black cats can be both

lucky and unlucky in the UK, depending on
who you ask.
If you break a mirror, you will have
7 years of bad luck.

FALS
TRUE
E

Probably you will, but only if you are

superstitious.
If you put your shoes on the table, it
will bring you luck.

FALS
TRUE
E

So you’d better keep your shoes off the

furniture (especially if they are new) and
not just because they are dirty.
If you walk under a ladder, you will
have bad luck.

FALS
TRUE
E

Especially if the bucket hits you, lol.

If you find a three-leaf clover, it will
bring you luck.

FALS
TRUE
E

Only a four-leaf clover will bring you luck,

so they say.
If you spill salt,
you will have good luck.

FALS
TRUE
E

It will bring you bad luck. So if you do, you

must throw some over your shoulder to
counteract the bad luck.
If you catch falling leaves in Autumn,
you will have good luck.

FALS
TRUE
E

Every leaf means a lucky month next year.

If you step on a line, you will fall
and break your spine.

FALS
TRUE
E
Walking along the pavement in the UK can
be bad luck if you’re not careful where you
put your feet – or so superstition would
have you believe.
You will always be lucky
if you hang a horseshoe over your door.

FALS
TRUE
E

The horseshoe needs to be hung in an

upward position (“U”) to bring you luck.
If you make a wish, then blow out all the
candles on your birthday cake in one blow,
your wish will be granted.

FALS
TRUE
E

Good luck with that once you are 90 and

there are 90 candles on your cake.
