Extra - oral maxillofacial

prosthesis
Classification of materials used for
construction of extra oral prostheses
A- Acrylic plastics :
- Methyl methacrylate.
B- Plasticized plastics:
- Vinyl chloride ( polyvinyl chloride – PCV).
C- Silicone rubbers:
- Room temperature vulcanizing (RTV) silicone
rubber
Nasal prosthesis
Nasal defects:
1- partial Rhinectomy defects.
2- total Rhinectomy defects.
Types of nasal prosthesis
1- temporal nasal prosthesis:
- After 3- 4 weeks of surgery.
- Material of choice is heat polymerized methyl
methacrylate).
2- definitive nasal prosthesis:
- With flexible material.
3- partial nasal prosthesis.
Construction of nasal prosthesis
1- extra oral impression .
2- wax pattern carving .
3- investing the wax pattern .
4- shade selection.
5- extrinsic coloration under the presence of the
pt.
6- evaluation of coloration under different light
sources.
7- retention by medical grade skin adhesive.
Eye prosthesis
Types of Eye prosthesis
• Ocular prosthesis :
It is aplastic prosthesis used when an eye is
surgically removed ,it is an artificial replacement
for the bulb of the eye.
Material of construction:
A- plastic acrylic eye( best).
B- glass eye.
• Scleral shells:
A scleral shell is an ocular prosthesis that is worn
over an existing eye.
• Orbital prosthesis :
Replaces eye and surrounding tissues.
• Conformer:
It is a temporary clear plastic prosthesis used
after surgery to maintain the size of the socket.
Implant retained orbital prosthesis
Implant fixtures placed in lateral portion of
supraorbital rim.
