Chain
In ecology, food chain is the
sequence of transfers of matter
and energy in the form of food
from organism to organism.

A food web (or food cycle) is the natural

interconnection of food chains and a graphical
representation of what-eats-what in an ecological
community

Organisms in food chains are grouped into categories called

trophic levels. Roughly speaking, these levels are divided
into producers (first trophic level), consumers (second, third,
and fourth trophic levels), and decomposers.
What is a

Producer Consumer

Detritivores
and
Decomposers
Also known as autotrophs
They make their own food

Are usually plants or

one-celled organisms.
Producer

They make up the first level Nearly all autotrophs use a

of every food chain. process called photosynthesis
to create food

Consumers
Secondary
Consumer

Consumer in a food chain are living creatures that eat organisms

from a different population.Consumers are typically viewed as Tertiary
predatory animals such as meat-eaters. Consumer
Primary Consumer
* Primary consumers are herbivores, feeding
on plants. Caterpillars, insects, grasshoppers,
termites and hummingbirds are all examples
of primary consumers because they only eat
autotrophs (plants).
Secondary Consumer
* Secondary consumers are carnivores,
and prey on other animals.
Tertiary Consumer
* - Tertiary Consumers can be either fully
carnivorous or omnivorous. Humans are an
example of a tertiary consumer. Secondary and
tertiary consumers both must hunt for their food so
they are referred to as predators.
Detritivores
and
Decomposer
s
How are detritivores different from
decomposers?
Detritivores are organisms that feed on the organic
waste of dead plants and animals while decomposers
are the organisms that decompose dead plants and
animals.
