Billy the Kid

About him in general

• born in New York, November 23, 1859


• died in New Mexico, July 14, 1881
• his real name is Henry McCarty
• also know by the aliases: Henry Antrim, Willliam
Harrison Bonney
• he was american outlaw from 19th century
• a participant in the Lincoln County War
Family

• his mother’s name was probably Catherine McCarty or Katherine

• his father’s name was probably William Bonney or Patrick Henry
McCarty
• Henry’s mother died beacause of TBC so he bacame an orphan
• he found a job in some hotel and allegedly he was really good at it
First crimes

• in 1875, Henry was arrested for hiding a bundle of stolen goods for a
man who did it out of a joke to a Chinese laundress
• two days after the arrestment, Henry snuck out of prison through
chimney, and was officialy considered as fugitive
• after that he found a job on some ranch in Arizona
• in 1877, he found a new job in military mail and was abused by a
colleague
• he couldn’t stand him so he decided to kill him
• Henry went to prison and of course escaped
Lincoln County War

• at the end of 1877, Henry moved to Lincoln County in New Mexico, and
found a job as livestock keeper
• a fight that quickly turned into war happend between city merchants
(The House) and ranchers
• in February 1878, The House decided to kill one of the leaders of
ranchers, John Tunstall
• beacause of that, Henry gathered ranchers and they created a gang
called The Regulators
• The Regulators killed two of The House members and one of their own,
but he was a traitor
Lincoln County War

• April 1, Billy the Kid, Fred Waite, Jim French, Frank MacNab and John Middleton
ambushed sherif William Brady and his deputy
• soon after that, The Regulators killed the man who killed their leader
• Billy became a leader of the gang and the gang was hiding few months after that
• members of the House managed to find them and set a trap for them
• The Regulators were under siege and incessant gunfire for several days, but they
managed to escape
• while running away Billiy killed one member of The House, but The Regulators lost
one of their members and that wwas the end of war
• in next few years Regulators found themselves in all sorts of situations, murders,
robberies and escaping the prison
Pat Garrett

• at that time, Billy made a great friendship with former


buffalo hunter, Patrick Garrett
• in November 1880, garrett became Lincoln County
sheriff gathered his new cooperatives, members of
police department, and wemt to hunt Kid
• he put 500 dollars on his head
• police department, with Garrett’s help managed to find
Billy and his gang, Billy barely escaped, but member of
his gang, Tom O'Folliard, lost his life
Pat Garret

• Garrett and his team managed to track down Billy


the Kid and folow him to abandoned building in
Stinking Springs
• they cought the gang, gang surrendered beacause
there was no way of escape
• before the gang surrendered Billy and Garrett said a
few words to eachother and Billy told Garrett to go
to hell
Escape from Lincoln

• Billy was in prison waiting for trial to begin


• Billy spent the most of the time in prison, talking to media
• he was convicted for several mureders in Lincoln County War
• the judge sentenced him with death by hanging, on April 13
• his death was predicted in a month so Billy was returned to Lincoln
Prison
• on April 28, Billy murdered two Garrett’s gardians and escaped
• Billy stole a horse for his escape, and horse vas returned two days
later
Death

• Garrett heard some rumors about Billy being in Fort


Summer, so he took to of his men and wnt to find him
• Garrett went to Billy’s friend’s house and asked him
some questions, when Billy came in too
• there are two version of next event
• first: Kid didn’t recognized Garret, so he asked who is
there, and when Garrett heard his voice, he pulled his
gun out and shot Billy
• second: Kid had a knife before he went in and asked
who it is (because it was dark) and Garrett shot him
