Sigmund Freud
Sigmund Freud was the founder of
psychoanalytic theory. While his ideas were
considered shocking at the time and create debate
and controversy even now, his work had a
profound influence on a number of disciplines,
including psychology, sociology, anthropology,
literature, and even art.
Psychoanalytic Theory
Supports the notion that all human behavior is caused and can be
explained. Freud believed that repressed sexual impulses and
desires motivated much human behavior.

"Hysterical" or Neurotic Bahavior of Women


• Disturbances of sight and speech
• Inability to eat
• Paralysis of limbs
Personality Components
The ID is the part of one's nature that reflects basic or innate desires such as
ID pleasure-seeking behavior, aggression, and sexual impulses.

The SUPEREGO is the part of a person's nature that reflects


SUPEREGO moral and ethical concepts, values, and parental and social
expectations

The EGO represents mature and adaptive behavior that allows a


EGO person to function successfully in the world.
Levels of Consciousness

Conscious refers to the perceptions, thoughts, and emotions that


exist in the person's awareness

Preconscious thoughts and emotions are not currently in the person's


awareness, ut he or she can recall them with some effort

The Unconscious is the realm of thoughts and feelings that motivate a


person, even though he or she is totally unaware of them.

What we do or say is motivated by our Subconscious thoughts or feelings.


"Freudian Slip" - slip of the tongue, indications of subconscious feelings or
thoughts that accidentally emerged in casual day-to-day conversation
DREAM ANALYSIS
A person's dreams reflected his or her
subconscious and had siginificant meaning

A primary method used in psychoanalysis,


involves discussing a client's dreams to
discover their true meaning and
significance.
Ego Defense Mechanisms
Methods of attempting to protect the self and cope with basic drives or
emotionally painful thoughts, feelings, or events.

Transference
Occurs when the client displaces onto the
therapist aattitudes and feelings that the client
originally experienced in other relationships

Countertransference
Occurs when the therapist displaces onto the client
attitudes or feelings from his or her past.
Psychoanalysis
focuses on discovering the causes of the client's unconscious and repressed
thoughts, feelings, and conflicts believed to causes anxiety and helping the
client to gain insight binto and resolve these conflicts and anxieties.
