• Antarctica is the Earth's southern most
continent,containing the geographic
South Pole.It is surrounded by the
Southern Ocean.The Antarctica is a
cold,remotes area in the Southern
Hemisphere encompassed by the
Antarctic Convergence.The Antarctica
covers approximately 20 percent of the
Southern Hemisphere.
CLIMATE
Antarctica is the coldest,windiest and
driest place on Earth.The continent is
also extremely dry averaging 166mm
of precipitation per year.Snow rarely
melts on most parts of the continent,
and after being compressed,becomes
the glacier ice that makes up the ice
sheet.The coldest temperature
recorded on Earth was at the South
Pole,it reached 128.6 FI
GEOGRAPHY
• Antarctica is almost covered by an ice
sheet.At its thickest,the ice is over 4 Km
deep.Beneath the ice sheet is a hidden
landscapes of mountains,valleys and
plains.Antarctica's dome shaped ice
sheet has been formed by snow.It is
surrounded by water.It has about 87%
of the world's ice.
LARGEST DESERT
• Antarctica is the World's coldest
continent.It is technically the
World's largest desert.It receives
less than 4mm of precipitation
monthly about the same as Sahara
Desert.The reason there is so much
snow is that ice rarely melts.
Conclusion
• Antarctica is indeed a heaven on earth,pristine and
appears magical.But as the horrors of global warming
unfold and the battle for land supremacy flares
up,countries need to be watchful on not getting into
territorial dispute but rather focus on scientific
approach.The need of the hour is an absolute regard
for the international agreements,commitment to
adhere to basic station inspections and more
importantly share research intelligence in a
collaborative manner as the healthy future of
Antarctica means sustainable future for us all.
