Methods of

Motivation
Non-financial rewards and methods
Non-Financial Rewards
Money is one of the most important factors when it
comes to work motivation but not at all the time.
Money-related motivation is known as financial rewards
where employees are given an advantage when it comes
to finance-related aspects for example employees are
given fringe benefits where they are given offers and
discounts on products/services made by the company
they are working in.

But money isn’t the only motivating factor, there are

other factors that cause employees to get motivated
without involving profit sharing or salary-related
aspects.
Job Redesign
Job rotation, Job Enlargement, Job Enrichment

All these 3 methods have go to do with what employees do at their workplace and they aim at job
satisfaction by reducing work boredom and breaking the monotonous routine.
Job Rotation: Reducing Boredom
Job rotation is when employees are given the right to switch between jobs instead of continuously doing
1 job. This will reduce boredom, make employees work life more interesting and empower the employee
with multiple skills and provide a flexible workplace.
Job Enlargement

Job enlargement is when

employees are given a greater
variety of similar levelled tasks
and this has the same objectives
as job rotation. It aims to reduce
boredom and make tasks more
interesting.
Job Enrichment
In this case, the work is organised so that
employees can use their skills and abilities more
efficiently. This form of motivation was
developed from Herzberg's research. By doing
this workers become more involved in the
decision-making process which is related to
their work. This makes workers feel more
important and valued. This increases job
satisfaction, efficiency and motivation.
Common Factors
Job Redesign
All the above 3 methods are known as Job Redesign. The aim of this is to make work more
interesting and challenging for workers. This is also allows employees to pick up multiple skills
and increase their chances of promotion.
More methods of
motivation
There are other methods of motivation than job redesign so let’s take
a look at them now.
Quality Circles: This form of motivation has more
to do with social responsibility and social
interaction. This activity is where groups of
workers meet together to discuss work-related
issues. Here the workers come up with solutions
and put across improvement suggestions. These
discussions are then presented to the managers so
that they can implement these solutions.
Team Work
Now each employee
Production workers Each group is given part of the groups
are divided into one whole task to receives a small
teams or groups complete share of work.

● Workload for each employee is reduced. Together as a group

● Increased productivity
● Company can pay wages based on the amount of work contributed
they will complete
by each employee the task by division
● Increased efficiency because now employees are each given one of task.
task to complete instead of 10 different tasks
● But employees might get bored performing the same task over and
over again until the project is completed
● Employees might also have conflicts when it comes to choosing
what part they want to work on.
Delegation
In this method managers of a firm will
give the responsibility of certain tasks to
lower level employees mostly as a form
of empowerment- employees will now
get to make decisions of their own
regarding how the tasks will be
performed. This gives them a sense of
authority!
Choosing methods
of motivation
Which one now?
Now that we have seen all the different methods of
motivation across 2 different presentations you may
be wondering how managers choose what method to
use when it comes to motivating their employees. Out
of all this, there isn’t actually one best method per
se but managers choose the methods based on what
they think will be effective for their employees. In
the following slides, I’ll talk about certain things they
take into account when deciding on what method to
choose.
1
Expenses
The business will always consider whether the cost of
the method chosen is affordable and whether it is worth
the cost.
2
Type of workers
Some methods can be used only for some types of workers. For
example, production workers may need different forms of motivation
from the people who work in the marketing sector of the company.
3
Different choices
One method of motivation might work for one group of
employees but might not work for the other. For example one
group might get motivated by a pay rise which means working
long hours but the other group would get motivated with a small
pay itself which means more leisure time.
