THE COLORS OF WHITE
LIGHT
Activity 1
Direction: Color the
rainbow using your
coloring materials based on
how well you remember a
rainbow looks like.
What description
could you give about
the rainbow?
In your own opinion,
how do rainbows
form? According to a
song - “there’s a
rainbow always after
the rain,” is this
statement true?
PROCEDURE:

1. TURN OFF THE LIGHT TO DIM THE CLASSROOM.

2. HOLD A CD AND SHINE IT WITH A FLASHLIGHT.
3. OBSERVE WHAT WILL HAPPEN.
QUESTIONS:

1.What happens
when the light hit the
mirror/cd?
2. What are the
colors you have seen.
3. List and arrange
the observed colors
according to how
they appear on the
wall.
WHAT IS DISPERSION?

The splitting up of
white light into its
seven constituent colors
on passing through a
transparent medium (cd
or glass prism)
SPECTRUM
The band of colors that is produced after dispersion.
The seven colors of the spectrum are: Violet, Indigo,
Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange, and Red. It can be denoted
by the word ROYGBIV.
Red, orange and yellow has the longest wavelength.
Violet has the shortest wavelength.
Newton’s Experiment
Newton performed an experiment
to show that white light consist of
colors. A white light ray is passed
through a prism to split it into the
colors of the spectrum. The
different colored light is allowed to
pass through an identical prism
kept in inverted position. The light
emerging out of second prism was
found to be white indicating that
the light ray consist of colors.
RAINBOW
A rainbow is a natural spectrum
appearing in the sky after a rain shower
or rainstorm. It is caused by dispersion
of sunlight by tiny water droplets
present in the atmosphere. A rainbow is
always formed in a direction opposite to
that of the Sun. The water droplets acts
like a small prism. They refract and
disperse the incident sunlight, then
reflect it internally, and finally refract it
again when it comes out of the raindrop.
Due to the dispersion of light and
internal reflection, different colors reach
the observer’s eye.
The shape of a rainbow is circle because the shape of the
earth is also circular or spherical that is why it is half of a
circle when it appears on the sky.
ARRANGE THE PHRASES TO
COME UP WITH THE SUMMARY
OF THE LESSON.
AGREE OR DISAGREE?

Do you agree in the

saying that “At the end of
a rainbow is a pot of
gold”. Why or why not.
