WEIGHING THE TEA AND SODIUM CARBONATE
ADDING THEM TOGETHER WITH 175 ML OF
DISTILLED WATER AND SOME BOILING CHIPS
PUTTING IT ON HOT PLATE AND BOIL IT FOR 10
MINUTES

• When we put the tea, sodium

carbonate and boiling Chip in
Erlenmeyer flask. You can
feel some heat or hot
temperature
WHEN IT’S FINALLY WARM, WE USED CHEESE
CLOTH FOR FILTRATION
AFTER THE FILTRATION, WE PUT IT INSIDE THE
SEPARATORY FUNNEL
• After shaking it for 5-10 time, we
noticed that the solution was starting to
separate. The lower part became clear
which is the CAFFEINE.
WE TRANSFERRED IT INTO A 125-ML
ERLENMEYER FLASK AND FILTERED IT USING
COTTON.
• And the total weight of the extracted
caffeine is 75.83 grams
QUESTIONS:
1. WHAT IS THE USE OF THE FOLLOWING
REAGENTS IN THE EXPERIMENT?
• A. SODIUM CARBONATE

• The use of sodium carbonate is to ensure that the caffeine and organic
acids are depronated.It will extract the ionic salts from the organic phase
and caffeine will be left alone.Also, it can abstract all the ionic
components and removing all protons attached to organic compound.
• B. Anhydrous sodium sulphate
The use of anhydrous sodium sulfate is to absorb the small
amount of water that is dissolved in the dichloromethane
and small amounts of water from aqueous layer that may
have gotten into the flask by accident.
2. WAS IT POSSIBLE TO USE CHLOROFORM INSTEAD
OF DICHLOROMETHANE AS AN EXTRACTION
SOLVENT IN THIS EXPERIMENT?

• Yes. Just like dichloromethane, chloroforms can use as

solvent extraction. It can give better physical separation
because of greater density and lower solubility in water.
Also, chloroform has the lowest TLV(Threshold Limit
Values).So it is safe to use use to avoid explosion.
3. WHEN ETHER OR DICHLOROMETHANE ARE SHAKEN WITH
WATER IN A CLOSED SEPARATORY FUNNEL, THERE IS AN
INCREASE IN THE PRESSURE, WHY? HOW WOULD YOU SAFELY
RELEASE
THIS PRESSURE?

• The shaking process greatly increases the surface are in contact

between two liquids, so when dichloromethane are shaken with
water, it allow for equilibrium to be established more rapidly
and increase pressure.To release its pressure, hold it tightly at
the stopper and stopcock. The funnel should be tightly
fixed.Release it slowly and make sure that you are wearing a
safety gloves.
4. WHAT ARE THE MAIN FEATURES OF A SEPARATORY
FUNNEL THAT MAKES IT SUITABLE FOR
EXTRACTION PURPOSES?

• Separatory funnel has the shape of cone surmounted by a

hemisphere.It has stopper and stopcock.The two mixture is to be
seperated in solution added through the top with the stopcock at
the bottom closed.The two layers are seperated by draining the
lower through the stopcock.
