Communication
--is a process of sharing and conveying
messages or information from one
person to another within and across
channels, contexts, media, and cultures
(McCornack, 2014)
COMMUNICATION
1. The process of creating and exchanging meaning
through symbolic interaction. Symbolic means
that we rely on words and nonverbal behaviors to
communicate meaning and feelings. Meaning
involves thoughts, ideas, and understandings
shared by communicators.

2. As a process, communication constantly moves

and changes. It does not stand still.
Nature of Communication
1. Communication is a complex
process.

2. Communication occurs between

two or more people -( a human
activity)
How have you had a communication problem or
failure to communicate?

Was there a miscommunication because of a lack of

understanding?
3. Communication can be
expressed through written or
spoken words (verbal) ,
actions/gestures (nonverbal), or
both spoken words and
nonverbal actions at the
same time.
COMMUNICATION PROCESS

There are
steps to
follow.
Communication Process and the Key Elements
Communication Process and the Key Elements
A. Sender – The communicator or sender is the
person who is sending the message. There are two
factors that will determine how effective the
communicator will be. The first factor is the
communicator’s attitude. It must be positive. The
second factor is the communicator’s selection of
meaningful symbols, or selecting the right symbols
depending on your audience and the right
environment.
B. Channel – A communication in writing,
in speech, or by signals

C. Message – information that is exchanged

between communicators
D. Receiver – The receiver is simply the
person receiving the message, making sense
of it, or understanding and translating it
into meaning. Communication is only
successful when the reaction of the receiver
is that which the communicator intended.
Effective communication takes place with
shared meaning and understanding.
E. Feedback – Feedback is the reaction of the
receiver. It can be a verbal or nonverbal reaction or
response. It can be external feedback (something we
see) or internal feedback (something we can’t see),
like self-examination.

It’s the feedback that allows the communicator to

adjust his message and be more effective. Without
feedback, there would be no way of knowing if
meaning had been shared or if understanding had
taken place.
