Barriers to Communication

1. Language/Linguistic Barriers
Clearly, language and linguistic ability
may act as a barrier to communication

The use of jargon. Over-complicated


or unfamiliar terms.
2. Psychological Barriers

The mental state of the receiver will


influence how the message is
received. Lack of attention, interest, distractions,
or irrelevance to the receiver.
3. Physiological Barriers

Bodily barriers may result from the


receiver’s physical state.
Defects: Deaf, mute
Unable to pronounce words correctly.
4. Physical Barriers

The geographic distance between


the sender and receiver(s).
Communication is generally easier over shorter
distances as more communication channels are
available and less technology is required.
5. Attitudinal Barriers
Attitudinal barriers are behaviors or
perceptions that prevent people from
communicating effectively.
Attitudinal barriers to communication may result
from personality conflicts, poor management,
resistance to change, or a lack of motivation.
6. Cultural Barriers
Barriers encountered by people
regarding their intrinsic
values/beliefs and traditions.
7. Semantic Barriers
Alternate meanings aroused by the speaker’s
symbols. This means that the word may have
another meaning in the minds of the others.
This is affected by the language in which they
grew. Language differences and the
difficulty in understanding
unfamiliar accents.
