The Late Middle Ages
Overview

•The fourteenth century was disastrous for Britain and for


the most part of Europe, because of the effect of wars and
plagues.

•Britain and France suffered, too, from the damages of war.

•The growth of an alliance between merchants and gentry


was of the greatest importance for later political
developments, particularly for the strength of Parliament
against the king in the 17th and 18th cc.

War with Scots and France
•In the 1330s England began a long struggle against
French Crown
•The habit of war created a new class of armed men in the
countryside instead of old feudal system of forty day’s
system and challenged the authority of the Crown.

•Name the reasons why England went to war with Scots
and France and why Burgundy made alliance with
England?
•Who were those two troublesome vassals that French king
mostly suffered from ?
•When did Edward III declare war on France and why and
how did this war end?

The age of chivalry
•Edward III and his eldest son, the Black Prince, were greatly
admired in England for their courage on the battlefield and
for their courtly manners.

•What is the "code of chivalry“?
•Who introduced the order of the Garter and what was it?

The Century of Plagues
•During 1348-1349 the terrible plague, known as the Black
Death, reached almost every part of England.

•Population growth and the need for more food production


caused an agricultural crisis

•The over usage of the land caused famine

•Talk about the positive changes of the 14th century

The Poor in Revolt
•In 1377 Richard II, Edward III’s grandson, at the age of
11 became the King

•He was governed by his advisors and these advisors


introduced a tax payment for every person over the age of
fifteen which tripled in 1381.

•Name the reason for the revolt and who was the
leader?
•Who developed the revolt?

Heresy and Orthodoxy
•In 1381 one rebel priest called for the removal of all
bishops and archbishops and nobles

•The Church was a feudal power and treated peasants with


as much cruelty as nobles did

Edward’s war with France?
•What was another thread for the church during the 14th
century?
•Talk about Lollardy and John Wycliffe
•What decision made Henry IV against Lollards?
