Calculate enthalpy Change – Bond Energy

Enthalpy change (ΔH)  = ΣEnergy taken in - ΣEnergy given out

Method:
•Add together all the bond energies for all the bonds in the reactants – this is the ‘energy in’
•Add together the bond energies for all the bonds in the products – this is the ‘energy out’
•Then calculate the enthalpy change (∆H)
Note:
If more energy is given out than is given in, the overall heat energy is negative, then reaction is exothermic
If more energy is given in than is given out, the overall heat energy is positive,the reaction is endothermic
