Activation Energy: Why Getting Started Is
the Hardest Part
many of the things we do each day
depend upon an initial push.

The bigger and more challenging an

action is, the more activation energy we
require to do it.
Terminology
• Enthalpy change ∆H is the amount of energy released or absorbed in
a reaction
• Endothermic reactions are chemical reactions in which the reactants
absorb heat energy from the surroundings to form products.
• Exothermic reactions are reactions in which energy is released into
the surroundings.
• Energy Activation is the minimum amount of energy needed to start
chemical reactions.
Project
• Create a poster explaining the application of endothermic and exothermic
reactions.

We feel excessive sweating on a Photosynthesis is not performed by Why do you feel warm when you sit
cloudy day. Why? plants at night. Why? near a bonfire and why?
• Connect the explanation with the • Connect the explanation with the • Connect the explanation with the
exothermic reaction endothermic reaction (required exothermic reaction (release heat
(condensation: gas ->liquid) energy from sun) to surrounding)
• Write the symbol equation of this • Write symbol chemical reaction • Write word equation when
