I notice
I notice…

I noticed that in my online English communication classrooms, adult

learners tend to lose motivation after learning with similar ready-made
slides for a while, which made me wonder if game-based activities can help
to stir up learning atmosphere and maintain students’ engagement. Hence, I
would like to investigate the effectiveness of
game-based activities in keeping adult learners’ interest in virtual
classrooms.
02
Research questions
Research questions

1. Are game-based activities helpful to attract adult learners in online

learning?

2. How do game-based activities keep adult learners’ interest in learning

English communication and help them reach their learning objectives?
03
Research
purpose & significant
Research purpose

1. To investigate whether adult learners find it interesting to play games during

virtual communicative lessons.
2. To reinforce benefits of game-based activities in maintaining students’
motivation as well as helping them to achieve their learning outcomes.
3. To propose a broader hypothesis for further research into the advantages and
disadvantages of game-like activities in language teaching and learning with
different types of learners.
Research significance

• Learners are expected to be more engaged in online classes

• Digital games helps students develop language skills
• Future reference for teachers and curriculum developers
• Further research reference in Vietnam context

Liturature review

1a. Action Research

James & Augustin (2018)
1) to understand current situations
2) to solve contemporary problems
3) to enhance teaching and learning practice
Liturature review

1b. Reflection cycle

Satariyan and Reynolds (2016)
1) reflect about (identifying)
2) reflect on (planning)
3) reflect in (acting)
4) reflect after (evaluating)
5) reflect for (improving)
Liturature review
2. Gamification in education
• Game-based learning benefits in raising learners’ engagement and motivation
• Learners are allowed to check their progress (Quizizz, Quizlet)
• Adventure games reinforce language learning because they incorporated all four
linguistic skills (PPT Games: Auction)
• Game-based learning helps enhancing students’ competence of English
vocabulary (Quizlet, Baamboozle, Wordwall)

(from many sources)

3. Adult learners with online game-based learning
• Adults are likely to be more disciplined as well as more responsible to
their learning
• Adults bring their rich real-life experiences to the classrooms
• Adult students tend to drop out of a course partly because of
uninteresting learning materials and activities
(from many sources)
