Means
Extremes
SLIDESMANIA.CO
After going through this lesson, you are expected to
illustrate and understand the concept of ratio and
proportion.
In the Proportion, the cross products of equal ratios are
equal
Means
a:b = c:d
Extremes
SLIDESMANIA.CO
Example 1 Tell whether the ratios form a proportion.
3:4 = 6:8
SLIDESMANIA.CO
Extremes
Example 2 Find the value of x
Step 1: Multiply the
2:4=3: means
Step 2: Multiply the
x extremes
12 Step 3: Divide the
product of the means to
12
=the
6 product of the
2
2x extremes.
So it means the missing term or
SLIDESMANIA.CO
the value of x is 6
Three types of Proportion
1. Direct Proportion
2. Indirect or Inverse Proportion
3. Partitive Proportion
SLIDESMANIA.CO
Direct Proportion
Example:
There are 120 families in the evacuation center consumed 1500 kilos (kgs) of
donated rice for 3 weeks. If there were only 1000 kilos(kgs) of NFA rice, how long will
families consume this volume of rice?
From the given situation above, you can see that the more kilos of rice there is, the
longer it last for 120 families. This situation is example of Direct Proportion.
SLIDESMANIA.CO
There are 120 families in the evacuation center consumed 1500 kilos (kgs) of
donated rice for 3 weeks. If there were only 1000 kilos(kgs) of NFA rice, how long will
families consume this volume of rice?
problem is 2 weeks
Other Example
A recipe requires 15 cups of flour for every 5 3ggs. How many eggs are needed for
105 cups of Flour?
Step Make a table of a Step Multiply the means
1 given ratio eggs
Cups of flour
3 and extremes
15 = 105
15 5 5 n
105 n
15n = 525
Step Make or Set up a Step Divide both side
2 15 proportion
105 4 by 15= 525
15n
= 15
15
5 n n = 35
Thus, 105 cups of flour are
SLIDESMANIA.CO
Note: Direct Proportion, as one quantity increases the other quantity also increase or as one quantity
needed for 35 eggs
decreases the other quantity also decreases.
Inverse or Indirect
Proportion
Example:
It takes Robin 20 minutes to ride his bicycle at 20kph from home to grocery store.
To shorten his travel time to 16 minutes for the same distance, how fast should he
cycle?
Step Make a table of a Step Divid
1 minutes
given ratio kph 3 400 e÷it16 = 2
20 20 16n 16 5
16 n
So, Robin should cycle
Step Multiply both at 25kph
2 20numerator and
400
= 20
16denominator
n 16n

Inverse or Indirect
Proportion
Example:
Fifteen workers can finish remodeling a building in 12 weeks. In how many weeks
will twenty workers finish remodeling the same building?
Note: Indirect Proportion, as one quantity increases, the other decreases or as one quantity
decreases, the other increases.
Partitive Proportion
Example:
A glass of Jar has 64 chocolates. Benedict, Dave, and Jiro will share chocolates in
the ratio 1:1:2. How many chocolates will each one of them get?
Understan
d A. What is asked?
The number of chocolates that each will get?
B. What are the given facts?
64 chocolates
Chocolates will be shared in the ratio 1:1:2
C. Plan
Write a partitive proportion to solve the problem.
SLIDESMANIA.CO
To solve the problem, there are steps to
follow:
Step Add the terms of the ratio to find the total
1 number
1 + 1 + 2of parts.
= 4 each part by the total number of parts to
Step Divide

How many square meters is each part?
B. What are the given facts?
500 square meters
A piece of land in the ratio of 2:3:5
C. Plan
Write a partitive proportion to solve the problem.
SLIDESMANIA.CO
To solve the problem, there are steps to
follow:
Step Add the terms of the ratio to find the total
1 number
2 + 3 + 5of parts.
= 10 each part by the total number of parts to
Step Divide
2 50the terms
get Total of
