• A population pyramid, also called an age


pyramid or age picture diagram, A Population
Pyramid is a graph that shows the age-sex
distribution of a given population. It a graphic
profile of the population’s residents. Sex is
shown on the left/right sides, age on the y-
axis, and the percentage of population on
the x-axis
Types of population pyramids
 Stationary pyramid
Stationary population pyramids are those that
show a somewhat equal proportion of the
population in each age group. There is not a
decrease or increase in population. it is stable.
Austria has a stationary population pyramid.
 Expansive pyramid
• Populations with this shape usually have high
fertility rates with lower life expectancies
 Constrictive pyramid
• There is a lower percentage of younger
people. Constrictive population pyramids
show declining birth rates. The United States
has a constrictive population pyramid.
