Equilibrium
3.1 Introduction
 a body is said to be in equilibrium when the resultant of all
the forces acting on it is zero.

 Note that these are both necessary and sufficient


Conditions for equilibrium.
3.2 Equilibrium in 2D
• In two-dimensional body, the maximum number of
unknown variables is three. And the three equilibrium
equations are sufficient to solve the unknown variables.
Thus, whatever the combination, three total equations are
maximally needed. What we have seen is two forces and
one moment equations.
