Should have / Would have

SHOULD HAVE
 Should have means that something did not happen, but
we wish it had happened. We use should have to talk
about past mistakes. 

 Should have is mainly used to give advice for past


events. This is hypothetical. What an ideal action was in
the past. Something that wasn’t done.
SHOULD HAVE-STRUCTURE

 SUBJECT+ SHOULD HAVE + VERB IN PAST PARTICIPLE

 Here are some examples:

 You should have gone to bed earlier. (+) positive
 I shouldn’t have said that. (-) (-)means
negative
 I shouldn’t have drunk so much. (-)

WOULD HAVE- USE AND STRUCTURE

"Would have" is used together with a main verb. When you see "would have" in a sentence it
means that the action didn't actually happen, because something else didn't happen first.

 Would have + past participle means that something was possible in the past, or you had the
opportunity to do something in the past, but that you didn't do it.

Structure:

Subject + would have + verb in past participle

 I would have gone to the party, but I was tired. (+)


 I wouldn’t have baked a cake. (-)
