The Use of Songs in Teaching Students’
Listening Ability

The article that we choose to review is “The Use of Songs in

Teaching Students’ Listening Ability”. This article is written by
Apin Hidayat, a graduate student from English Education
Study program of Indonesia University and has been published
by Journal of English Education (2013)
The Use of Songs in Teaching Students’
Listening Ability

The researcher used the quantitative method

Researchers selected 60 grade 2 SMPN students from Sumedang as a
sample by giving 2 types of tests, namely pretest and posttest. This
test uses 2 instruments, namely the TOEFL-based listening test
consisting of 50 questions to evaluate mastery in listening
comprehension and a questionnaire consisting of 8 questions about the
difficulties of students in dealing with listening comprehension using
songs as the medium.
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES

This article has complete data from research results in the form of
data calculations, where the completeness of the data is more
accurate than just providing a description of research results. In
addition, the methods, instruments, designs, and procedures are
clearly described in this article to make analysis easier. However, the
results of the analysis are not fully described; the TOEFL test result
data is explained in detail only in the form of a comparison between
the TOEFL and the questionnaire. So we have difficulty finding the
results of the pretest and posttest to determine whether there is an
increase or not.
COMPARISON OF ARTICLES WITH THE
POINT OF VIEW AS A TEACHER
According to the author, using songs in the learning process not only
assists the teacher in teaching but also draws students' attention to
following and understanding the lesson. one of the learning media in
schools that has a great influence on students' creativity. Songs can
also improve students' memory and understanding of vocabulary
effectively. As a teacher, the selection of learning media is one thing
that supports the results of learning. Therefore, the song is one of
the media that can be used by teachers in supporting the learning
process, especially in supporting students' listening skills
COMPARISON OF ARTICLES WITH THE
POINT OF VIEW AS A TEACHER

Therefore, we agree with this article because teachers are advised to

choose songs that are easy to understand and not too fast in terms of
rhythm so that students can follow the material based on what they
hear from the song. In addition, differences in singers' accents are
one of the difficulties faced by students in listening to and
understanding songs.
conclusion
Please keep in mind that not all English songs can be used as a
learning tool. Songs with too much dominant music, for example, or
songs with too much metaphorical language, such as Slank language,
are not suitable for childrens. Choose a song that is easy and
appropriate for learning (curriculum, for example). Choose songs with
clear lyrics and perfect pronunciation as well. Because students will be
using the song as a model, they must select the best model. If the
instructor is going to sing it, it must also be guaranteed that the
teacher will set a good example for the kids.
