Bulgarian customs
In Bulgaria, eggs are traditionally painted on Good Thursday or Great Sabbath, their
number depending on the family members. The first is always colored red by the older
woman. While it is still warm and freshly painted, it paints a named sign on the children's
foreheads to be healthy. Until the appearance of artificial colorants, decoctions of herbs,
nuts, etc. were used. With a decoction of brooch, red bagra was obtained from sumac –
orange, green – from nettle, yellow – from walnuts and apple peels or decoction of old
onions. Whenever eggs were painted, a separate basket was prepared for the best men.
An egg was also donated to every guest who crossed the threshold. For additional
decoration, the prints of parsley petals or figurines painted with wax or colored pencils
were used. According to the trust, the one whose egg stays healthy after will be healthier
during the year. The first painted red egg is placed in front of the home icon to protect the
home.
