What Are They?

• Power harmonics are high-frequency voltage distortions

• Create a non-linear load resulting in a distorted wave form

• Harmonics can be present in single and three phase non-linear loads

• Their frequencies are integer multiples of the fundamental system frequency

– Example: at 60Hz
• The second harmonic is 120Hz
• The Third harmonic is 180 Hz
• And so on…

• Sources of power harmonics include

– Computers
– Double conversion UPS

Harmonic Cancellation
• Voltage Correction by High Speed Detection and IGBT Control

• Unlike SCR front end double conversion UPS systems, CAT Flywheel UPS do not require
input filters to reduce harmonics of 30-50% THD presented to input source

• Provides desired harmonic current required by load, so that harmonic current demands on
input are eliminated
