Flags OF Mississippi
Mississippi First Flag
Mississippi's first flag was created on
March 30, 1861. The first flag was known
as the Magnolia flag. It had a white
background, a magnolia tree in the middle,
and a blue square in the upper left corner
with a star in the middle of it.
Mississippi
Second Flag
On Feb 7, 1894, the legislature replaced the
Magnolia flag with a new one. Edward N. 1894 - 1996
Scudder designed this new flag, and it
incorporated the Confederate. In 2000,
the Supreme Court of Mississippi confirmed
that the state legislature had in 1906
repealed the 1894 adoption of the state
flag. In January 2001, then-Governor Ronnie
Musgrove appointed an independent
commission that developed a new proposed 1996 – 2001
flag design.

2001 - 2019
Mississippi Current Flag

On June 9, 2020, lawmakers of

Mississippi gathered votes and
started drafting legislation to
change the state flag. This new
legislation would make Laurin
Stennis design the new flag of
Mississippi. With support from
Philip Gunn, the lawmakers began
to help the state flag get changed.
The Change of
the State Flag
In the past 5 years, the Mississippi flag has changed.
Robert Johnson, who is the state representative, said
he remembers growing up in Natchez, Ms. He said when he was
younger, he remembers seeing Ku Klux Klan members flying
Confederate flags and riding horses in his town's Christmas
parade.  “It is a symbol of terror in the Black community,” he told
NBC News. “It is a symbol of oppression in the Black community,
and it is a symbol of slavery. Everything that has been devastating
to African Americans and to especially African Americans in the
South, everything that has been a complete and utter disaster
for us, that flag represents.”Then Johnson, with the help of over
500,000 Mississippians, pushed to get the Mississippi state flag
changed. In my opinion the state flag should have been changed
because lots of African Americans live in Mississippi and the flag
was made in a time of slavery and makes people remember the
time of slavery.
