Abstract Dept. of Electrical and Electronics Engineering

• A three-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) AC drives are the most prevalent
• This work presents a simulation of modified space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM)
applied to voltage source inverters (VSI). The output from VSI is used to control the speed of the
PMSM. This work uses MATLAB simulation to construct, develop and analyze a three-phase
VSI that feeds the PMSM drive to control speed.
• There are many methods for speed control of PMSM , SVPWM control is mostly preferred and
considered the best method because of its high performance in drive systems. A SVPWM
technique is used to change the motor's speed by changing the amplitude and frequency of the
stator voltage.
• Furthermore, compared to conventional pulse width modulation modulations, this SVPWM
approach with a different timing sequence has various advantages such as reduced ripples in
voltage and current, the best and effective utilization of a DC bus, and decreases in the harmonic
content. Because of these numerous benefits, SVPWM is increasingly being used in motor
control and power converters.

PERMANENT MAGENT SYNCHRONOUS

MOTOR
• In Permanent magnet synchronous motors the rotor winding are replaced by permanent
magnets.
• A permanent magnet synchronous machine is basically ordinary AC machine with
winding distributed in the stator slots so that the flux created by stator current is
approximately sinusoidal.
• Permanent magnet drives are replacing classic DC and induction machine drives in a
variety of industrial applications such as industrial robots and machine tools.
• Two types of permanent magnet ac motor drives are available:
1) PMSM drive with a sinusoidal flux distribution.
2) Brushless dc motor drive with a trapezoidal fluxdistribution. There are two major

SVPWM BASED THREE PHASE INVERTER

• In SVPWM, the inverter can be thought of as three separate push-pull driver stages,
which create each phase waveform independently.
• SVPWM, however treats the inverter as a single unit. The space vector method is a d,q

Conclusions
• Space vector Modulation Technique has become the most popular and important PWM
technique for Three Phase Voltage Source Inverters for the control of , Brushless DC,
Switched Reluctance and Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors. SVPWM is most widely
used in industrial converters due to its ease of implementation. The SVPWM scheme can
drive the inverter gating signals from the sampled amplitudes of the reference phase
voltages. The switching vectors for the inverter are derived using a simple digital logic
which does not involve any complex computations and hence reduces the implementation
time. SVPWM drive treats the inverter as a single unit with eight switching states, each state
can be represented by a state vector in the two-axis space, the eight state vectors formed a
hexagon shape with six sectors. It utilizes dc bus voltage more effectively and generates less
THD in the three phase voltage source inverter as indicated in Table. Further improved
techniques like Wavelet modulation, multilevel SVPWM techniques can also being
developed for reduction in harmonics.

Applications
• The main application of SVPWM is three phase motor space vector control. This technique is
also known as space vector modulation. It is used to create three phase alternating current wave
forms to drive three phase motors like induction motor.

• Multilevel converters produce excellent line-side and load-side performances such as nearly
sinusoidal line-currents at unity power factor and regulated and reduced-rippled load voltage, the
neutral point of the neutral-point clamped converters is prone to fluctuations due to the irregular
charging and discharging of DC-bus capacitors.

• It presents implementation of different space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) switching
patterns for three phase voltage source inverters (VSI) using digital signal processor (DSP) and
comparative analysis of them. The sequence most favored in the literature is not the best one for
all applications.

• The performance over a wide range of applications makes three-phase induction motors
accountable for 85 percent of the installed capacity of the industrial driving systems. Let us
discuss on basic information about this motor and its special controlling technique of SVPWM.

Future scope
• One of the popular AC motor drive available in drive industry is permanent magnet synchronous
motor (PMSM) drive. A novel approach of PMSM drive control using space vector pulse width
modulation (SVPWM) technique is proposed based on the principle of field oriented control.

• In space flight analysis it is very important to know the position and motion of the satellite.
CMG(Control moment Gyroscope) are nowadays used in small satellites .The CMG depends on two
motors for operation. One is a brushless DC motor(BLDC) which is used to spin the momentum
wheel and the other one is a stepper motor used to gimbal themomentum wheel around an axis
which is perpendicular to the spin axis. The objective of this thesis is to improve torque smoothness
in CMG.

• the performances of a permanent magnet synchronous motor and impact of the control method on
the diagnosis strategy are presented. First, permanent magnet synchronous motor and two level three
phase inverter with space vector PWM strategy is developed. The PMSM speed is controlled by
sliding mode control.
