CONTEMPORARY PHILIPPINE MUSIC
 
Traditional is music with elements based on western music norms. With the
entrance of Spanish colonizers, this music has become an accultured
tradition of entrance of the Spanish colonizers, this music has become an
acculturated tradition of Philippine music. Ompositions of Filipino
traditional composers reflect the localized aesthetic of European art music.
Thus, you may find the music similar to some kinds of western classical
music in terms of melody, harmony, form, or texture. Also to be observe is
that distinct Filipino sound, which set it different from western music.
LUCIO SAN PEDRO
Lucio Diestro San Pedro was born on 11 february 1913 in ANgono, Rizal.
His parents were Elpidio San Pedro, a musician himself, and Soledad
Diestro. San Pedro belongs to esteemed roster of proclaimed National Artists
of the Philippines, of which he was conferred with in 1991. San Pedro took
formal studies in music at the UP conservatory of music, where he learned
his teacher’s Diploma in composition and Conducting. He went to the United
States to take his master’s degree in composition at the Juilliard School of
Music. Her received numerous award. Among which were the 1946 National
composition contest and the 1962 Republic Cultural Heritage Award.
He has composed hymns, masses, chamber music, choral and theme music,
and incidental music for films. One of his most popular compositions today “
Ugoy ng DUyan” a lullaby, written as part of his suite pastorale, a
compilation of choral works. The orchestral compositions are “ The Devil’s
Bridge” “ Malakas at Maganda” and Overture, Prelude and Fugue in D
minor. His music for bands includes “ Dance of the Fairies”” Triumphal
March””Lahing Kayumanggi”and “ Angononian March.” He died on 31 of
March 2002.
ANTONIO MOLINA
Antonio Jesus Naguit Molina was born 26 December 1894 in Quiapo,
Manila. His parents were Juan Molina and Simeona Naguiat. Molina’s father
was a musician and was founder of the 22-piece Orchestra Molina (Orquestra
Molina). At 12 years old, Antonio could play several stringed instruments,
but his exposure to orchestral music during rehearsals of his father’s
orchestra made him learn the violin early on.
 
He studied college at Colegio de San Juan de Letran in 1909. In 1919, he
entered the Up Conservatory of music. He finished his teacher’s Diploma
course in 1923, after which he toured Hanoi and other Indo-China cities to
concertize.
Molina composed his first music in 1912, titled”Matinal,” a work that he
considered a product of inspiration, rather than a technically challenging
work . After this , he wrote a series of waltzes,” Lamentos de mi Patria ,” in
1913, and a famous violin piece”Hatinggabi” in 1915. He wrote the music
for a sarsuwela titled” Ana Maria.”and big works such as “ Misa Antoniana
Grand Festival Mass” (1964), “ ANg Batingaw” (1972), and “Bontok
Rhapsody” (1928). In its totality, Molina composed music for piano, violin,
voice, and cello. It is said that he still has a sunstancial number of
compositions that remains unpublished.
 
Antonio Molina is the first National Artist for Music which was conferred on
12 JUNE 1972. He died on 29 of January 1980.
