TRADITIONAL FILIPINO COMPOSER
PHILIPPINE MUSIC
 Before the colonization of the Western powers, Philippine music already had
its form.
 Music was first used for retelling epic stories of different heroes with
supernatural abilities, for rejoicing over hard work, and for celebrating the
different passages of life.
When the Spaniards came, they introduced religious and secular songs.
The American then paved the way for the Filipinos to be exposed to the
classical music and popular music of America
ORIGINAL PILIPINO MUSIC (OPM)

 Original Pilipino Music refers to the Philippine pop music.


The Philippine pop music was first established as an adaptation of
different Western hit songs.
 The biggest voice of the OPM between the 1980s to 1990s was
that of Regine Velasquez. Aside from Velasquez, Sharon Cuneta,
APO Hiking Society, Jose Mari Chan, Dingdong Avanzado, Ogie
Alcasid, Lea Salonga and Gary Valenciano also became well-known
OPM artists in the 1990s.
 The Pinoy rock was also able to capture the hearts of Filipino
listeners, boosting the OPM industry even more.
 OPM is centered in Manila, where Filipino and English are dominant
languages.
TRADITIONAL OPM COMPOSERS

1. Lucio San Pedro


 was a master composer, conductor and teacher.
 One of his biggest contributions to Philippine music is his composition of the
lullaby “Sa Ugoy ng Duyan”.
 He taught music in different institutions such as Ateneo de Manila University,
Centro Escolar University Conservatory of Music and University of the
Philippines College of Music.
 He was conferred the honor of being the National Artist for Music in 1991.
2. Antonio Buenaventura
 National artist of the Philippines for music, was a renowned
composer, conductor, and teacher.
 He restored the Philippine Army Band; thus, it has become
the only military band that sounds like symphony orchestra.
 He founded his own music school in Laguna, the San Pablo
Music Academy.
 He compiled and popularized different Filipino folk songs
from the different regions of the country.
3. Antonio Molina
 was a versatile musician, composer, teacher and conductor.
 He was known to be one of the pioneers of innovative
Philippine music.
 Molina was also the first conductor who performed classical
piece such as Bach’s “Christmas Oratorio” in 1947 and Mozart’s
“Don Giovanni” in 1950.
 He was the first composer who performed in Malacanang and
he was the first composer whose performance was televised.
4. Alfredo Buenaventura
 was one of the well-known official organists of Manila
Cathedral.
 He was also a former soprano in the famous Tiples at Sto.
Domingo Church.
His musicality was a combination of Philippine traditional
music and contemporary harmonies.
5. Rodolfo Cornejo
 was a composer, pianist, and conductor.
 He was considered a child prodigy in Music, he enrolled at
the University of the Philippines Music Conservatory.
 He finished his doctorate studies in composition in the United
State.
 He served as the official researcher and composer for the
Philippine government in exile during the Second World War.
6. Antonio Buencamino
 was a pianist, director, musician and composer.
 He founded the Conservatory of Music in Ateneo de
Manila, serving as the head of the conservatory until
1938.
 Buencamino was also a well-known composer of
several famous kundiman such as “En el Bello Oriente”
and “Ang Una Kong Pag-ibig”.
 He also founded the Buencamino Music Academy in
1930.
7. Hilarion Rubio
 was a conductor, composer and teacher.
 He was an orchestra conductor for ballet shows and dance
recitals.
 He was the bandleader of the ROTC band of the University of
the Philippines until he graduated.
 He also founded the Anak Zapote Band.
 He was a member of National Band Conductors’ Association in
Washington D.C
8. Rosendo Santos
 was dubbed as the Philippine composer of the
century
 He was also a conductor, timpanist and pianist.
 He was a faculty member of the University of the
Philippines Conservatory of Music.
 He composed music for J. Arthur Rank Films at
Pinewood Studios in London, England.
9. Ryan Cayabyab
 is a prominent musician, composer, arranger and teacher.
 He is the Director of the San Miguel Foundation of the Performing Arts.
 He is also known for his compositions that contributed to the development of pop
music in the Philippines.
 His well-known mainstream compositions are “Tuwing Umuulan at Kapiling Ka,”
“Da Coconut Nut” etc.
He also composed soundtracks for Filipino movies such as “Kay Ganda ng Ating
Musika,” “Magandang Gabi sa Inyong Lahat” etc.
 He is also the executive director of the Philpop Music Fest Foundation.
