FRUITS AND VEGGIE

An Advocacy Proposal On Encouraging Daily Fruit And Vegetable
Consumption Among Family Medicine Personnel In VSMMC
JEREEL HOPE R. BACON
2ND YEAR RESIDENT
OVERVIEW
• Fruits and vegetables are included in dietary recommendations due to
their high concentrations of dietary fiber, vitamins, minerals, particu-
larly electrolytes, and, more recently, phytochemicals, particularly an-
tioxidants.
OVERVIEW
• Several studies have linked low fruit and vegetable consumption to
chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure,
hypercholesterolemia, osteoporosis, many cancers, chronic obstruc-
tive pulmonary disease, respiratory problems, and mental health.
FACTS AND FIGURES

According to WHO, low fruit and vegetable consumption accounts for approximately
16 million (1.0%) DALYs and 1.7 million (2.8%) deaths worldwide. Consumption of
fruits and vegetables reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease, stomach cancer,
and colorectal cancer. Consumption of high-energy foods, such as processed foods
high in fats and sugars, promotes obesity when compared to low-energy foods
such as fruits and vegetables.
FACTS AND FIGURES

According to a 2016 study of fruit and vegetable consumption patterns, the aver-
age Consumption of Filipinos (particularly adolescents) is 343 grams per day. Fil-
ipinos' consumption of fruits and vegetables has decreased over time. According to
the Food and Nutrition Research Institute's Director Imelda Angeles-Agdeppa, based
on the Expanded National Nutrition Survey conducted from 2018 to 2019, per capita
consumption was less than the World Health Organization's (WHO) 400-grams per
day recommendation.

• Expected outcomes include increase consumption of fruit
and vegetable among all personnel of family and commu-
nity medicine in VSMMC.
• Increase access to fruits/vegetable in the workplace can be
achieved by having available fruits and vegetable salad in
our pantry which can encourage us to have healthier option
for our snacks and meals.
• As primary care physician, we can serve as good example
to our patient’s by also practicing what we teach them.
