ACADEMIC WRITING 1 (PBFI 3093)

PROBLEM STATEMENT
1. From own observation / experience

- Most of TESL students are not being exposed much about the Etymology when learning English language
- Although students have been taught about English grammar, vocabulary, idioms, and things like that, but, they never
taught about a circular stroll through the hidden connections of the English language as well.

2. From other researchers’ finding :

Primary Source :
Most conscientious second-language learners, is dictionary-dependent, they instinctively consult a dictionary constantly
because lack of knowledge about the words they dont know. ( Herbert D. Pierson, Using Etymology in Classroom,
2016 ) Research shown that, by applying Etymology subject in classroom can help students to enhance their English
language skills

Secondary Source :
For many years, the programs that prepared English language learners offered little or no attention to the effective teaching
and learning the relevant vocabulary by the instructors and ultimately guessing and learning the unknown words by the
students .The ability to learn new words easily and effectively appears to have vanished. ( Masoud Hashemi, Etymology:
a word attack strategy for learning the english vocabulary, 2017 ) Research shown that, Etymology is an important
aspect to all English learners
