Abstract

This research aimed to enhance the pronunciation skills of Grade 7 students through a
“Pro-Train”; a one day seminar-workshop that covered various oral interaction activities handled
by the researchers. The participants were __________ Grade 7 students of the Ginto-an NHS,
A.Y. 2016-217. To measure the effects of the training, the participants were given a pre-test
ant posttest. The results indicated that the training was effective in enhancing the pronunciation
skills of the participants.

GRADE 7 STUDENTS

Chapter 1

Introduction of the Study

This chapter is composed of five parts: (1) Background and Theoretical Framework of the

Study; (2) Statement of the Problem and Hypothesis; (3) Significance of the Study; (4)

Definition of Terms; and (5) Delimitation of the Study.

Background of the Study

Pronunciation is very much a “must” skill for any English language learners, but it is
common knowledge that many learners ignore pronunciation in language learning.
Unfortunately, a large number
According to Szynalski and Wójcik (www.antimoon.com), almost all learners of English
claim that they do not need to study pronunciation. Many of them are convinced that it is
simply a waste of time. They just want to communicate in English and, as long as they are
understood, little else matters. It is obvious that the main purpose of teaching and learning any
foreign language is to enable students to communicate in the target language. If this is the
case, the meaning of the word ‘communication’ is worth explaining. In brief, it means to
understand and be understood.
Unfortunately, numerous teachers are not aware of the importance of pronunciation. In
the first place, they emphasize the role of grammar and vocabulary learning in the acquisition
of a foreign language. The overwhelming majority of English language teachers help students
become competent above all in listening and reading (Harmer, 2001: 183).

Theoretical Framework of the Study

There have been trainings and lectures conducted to master the English language

wherein different strategies are being used. However there are no specific methods that can be

generic but effective for us second language speakers. This is the aim of this study, to create a

training design that would develop pronunciation skills of non-native English-speakers. One

major example is teachers in the field of the English language, mostly schools focus on

discussing theories of the language inside the classrooms but the actual practice is taken of less

attention thus the effect of which is the incapacity to use the language especially in the oral

aspect. This suggests that there is a great need of enhancing the communicative skills of

students’ especially future English teachers. This study aims to develop a specific training in

which the pronunciation skills of the students will be greatly enhanced through the ‘Pro-train.

The study is graphically illustrated below:

Statement of the Problem

This research aimed to measure the effect of the Pro-Train in enhancing the
pronunciation skills of Ginot-an NHS Grade 7 students.

Specifically this study sought answers to the following questions:

1. What is the pronunciation proficiency level of Ginot-an NHS Grade 7 students

a. Prior to the Pro-Train
b. After the Pro-Train

2. Is there a significant difference in the pronunciation proficiency level of Ginot-an NHS

Grade 7 students after exposure to Pro-Train?

Hypothesis

The Pro-Train has no significant effect in enhancing the pronunciation skills of the Grade

7, 2016-2017 of Ginot-an National High School.

Significance of the Study

The results will be beneficial to the following persons:

Students. The training will enhance their pronunciation skills and develop their

confidence that will be very helpful in their future career.

Teachers. This will introduce and provide them with new various strategies to enhance

the pronunciation skills of their learners

Parents. Their children will be provided with an enhancement program on pronunciation

skills and for them as stakeholders to become open-minded in giving financial and moral

support for development their child’s proficiency in pronunciation.

Future Researchers. This action research can be a springboard or a source of

information for future studies in the development of oral proficiency and the like.

Definition of Terms

Delimitation of the Study

The study centered on the effect of the Pro-Train to enhance the pronunciation skills in

English of Grade 7 2016-2017 of Ginot-an National High School. The training was conducted

within a day.

It only covered lectures and workshops to enhance pronunciation skillsof native

speakers.

Chapter III

Research Design and Methodology

Chapter 3 consists of three parts: (1) Research Design, (2) Method and (3) Statistical

Data Analysis Instruments

Research Design

This study employed the experimental method of research. Experimental research aims

to prove the effect of an independent variable in the study.

The independent variable was the Pro-Train; a training designed by the researchers to

enhance the pronunciation skills of the participants.

The dependent variable was the pronunciation skills before and after undergoing the

said training.

Method

Participants

The participants were _____________ committed freshmen Grade 7 students of Ginot-

an National High SChool for the academic year 2016-2017. The participants are required to

finish the one day training.

Pretest, Training, and Posttest

The students were asked to read basic words given by the research team.
