STRESSORS AND RESPONSES

• Stress – In medical terms, is the body’s response to physical ,mental ,or emotional pressure.
Stress causes chemical changes on our body that can raise blood pressure ,heart rate and blood
sugar levels. It may also lead to feelings of frustrations , anxiety ,anger or depression.
- In psychology and biology, in psychology and biology, any environmental or physical
pressure that elicits a response from an organism.
- Stress can be defined as any type of change that causes physical, emotional or
psychological strain. Stress is your body's response to anything that requires attention or action.
Everyone experiences stress to some degree. The way you respond to stress, however, make a
big difference to your overall well-being. (WHO)
STRESSORS AND RESPONSES

• Stressors is an event or situation that causes stress.


• Stressors are associated with psychological stress reactions that involve depression and
anxiety. (C.J Holahan, R.H Moos 2017)
• Stressors represent a potential threat to the individual human or animal, and the stress
response is integral to adapting to the stressor. (Robert Murison 2016)
• Responses is how a person respond to a certain stress. It can be positive or negative. It
will also help with your stress management.
SOURCES OF COPING AND STRENGTH

• Coping is the process of spending conscious effort and energy to solve personal and
interpersonal problems. In the case of stress, coping mechanisms seek to master,
minimize, or tolerate stress and stressors that occur in everyday life. These mechanisms
are commonly called coping skills or coping strategies. All coping strategies have the
adaptive goal of reducing or dealing with stress, but some strategies can actually be
maladaptive (unhealthy) or merely ineffective.
• Coping usually involves adjusting to or tolerating negative events or realities while you
try to keep your positive self-image and emotional equilibrium. Coping occurs in the
context of life changes that are perceived to be stressful.

A Filipino medical anthropologist Mr. Michael L .Tan have mentioned in his article Stress
and Filipino that “Sure, Filipinos are resilient, but that doesn’t necessarily mean we
don’t feel stressed”. In his article, Dr . Tan focused on the social and cultural dimensions of
stress. He implies that society and culture upbrings major effect towards one’s perception
regarding stressors, its effects, and the ways of coping with it. In relation with that,
he specified some differentiations between the stress in western country and in the
Philippines ,support it with some examples thus concluded his article by proposing numerous
ways to cope with stress which are already in our culture.
