Oral Communication

Skills
Oral Communication Skills
• Communication means to convey our ideas, feelings and thoughts to the
audience. Audience may be one person or a group of persons. We can convey
our ideas and thoughts in many ways. There is no fixed method to
communicate our feelings and ideas to the other.
• We can communicate with others by:
1. Listening
2. Speaking
3. Reading
4. Writing
These are called four major communication skills.
listening
• We understand an oral message if we listen first to it. we listen at first
what we hear. If we do not listen to a message attentively, we cannot
respond to it. It is through listening that the response to one's message
may be given. If we do not listen to a message properly, it shall be
understood that we are not showing interest and activity to the speaker.
It shows our difference and apathy. Listening is also required in group
discussions, interviews, meeting etc. we cannot participate in group
discussions, if we do not listen to the views of others with patience
and attention. In communication, listening is the first step. It requires
great patience and practice to listen to a person even if he is expressing
his views in a pleasant manner.
Speaking
• Speaking is another component of oral communication. We cannot
communicate our ideas and thoughts face to face, by telephone or in a
meeting or group discussion by means of speaking. Messages can be
delivered from one person to the other through electronic devices.
Effective speaking is possible if we select correct and appropriate
words to speak. At the same time, a good speaker uses his gestures to
make his expression forceful. For effective speaking, we need rich
vocabulary, along the ordering of our thoughts.
Reading
• Reading is another method to remain in touch with the writer`s thought.
The writer of a book, fiction, poem or novel communicates with us by
means of written language. We read his writing and come close to his
ideas, feelings and reactions.
• Reading is a complicated and in folded skill. It requires a lot of vocabulary
to comprehend the written message of a writer. At the same, a reader has
to comprehend the symbolic and figurative language of the writer. He has
to decode it sometimes. A reader of a book has to read a book at many
levels. He may just go through it without paying much attention to its
words and context. He may devote his full mental powers to study the real
and symbolic meanings hidden in the message, the writer intends to give.
Writing
• Written communication is very popular in offices and departments of
al organizations. We communicate to the others by means of letters,
notices, circulars, memos, e-mails and drafts. We communication is
more important than oral communication. It is permanent.it keeps a
record. It is reliable.
• It can be learnt by persistent practice. It needs extensive reading along
with rich vocabulary. At the same time, the writer must have the ability
to marshal his ideas and feelings. He should write, rewrite and prepare
his message in a selected and clear language. This is possible only by
means of practice.
