LESSON 2 Inverse Variation
LESSON 2 Inverse Variation
The distance that a car can travel varies directly with the number of liters of a gasoline in a
tank. If a car can go 120km on 15 liters of gas, how far can it go on 9 liters?
Let x = number of liters of a gasoline
y = distance that a car can travel
y =kx
120 = 15 k Substitute the values
120 / 15= k
8=k Solve for k.
Therefore, k= 8 the equation of the problem is y = 8x.
y = 8 (9) Substitute 9 for x.
y = 72 Solve for y.
y= =y=
y=
y=4
How long will it take the car to reach its destination if it travels at a speed (r) of 40kph?
60kph? 80kph?
t= 3 hrs.
t= 2 hrs.
Rate (kph) 20 40 60 80
Time (hr) 6 3 2 1.5
EXAMPLES:
6. A crew of 12 can build a hut in 8 days. How long would it take a crew of 4 to build the
same hut?
Let x = the number of crew
y = number of days can build a hut
y=
8= Substitute the values
(8) (12)= k
96 = k Solve for k.
Therefore, k= 96 the equation of the problem is y = .
y= Substitute 4 for x.
y= Solve for y.
y=24 So, it will take 24 days for a crew of 4 to build a hut.
MIND EXERCISES
y varies inversely as x
DIRECTIONS: Solve the following. Find the equation of variation in which y
varies inversely as x, and solve y based on the given conditions exist.
