ALIENATION 'entfremdung'
- Developed by Karl Marx
- Economic and Philosophical Manuscripts of 1844
- Highlights and illustrates the discouraging, isolating, and
wrongful dehumanization that occurs when a person is of
employment under a capitalist system of production .
- According to Marx, the main cause is the economic system.
"For Marx, the concept of alienation is based on the
distinction between existence and essence , on the fact that
man's existence is alienated from his essence, that in reality
he is not what he potentially is, or, to put it differently, that
he is not what he ought to be, and that he ought to be that
which he could be."
Erich Fromm (1961) "Marx's Concept of Man"
SPECIES-BEING
'Gattungswesen'
• The essence of an organism that
distinguishes it from other living things.
• Marx believed our species-being was
WORK.
• OBJECTIFICATION
Alienation from the product .
The fruits of the worker ’s labor are not
received by the worker himself, instead,
they are given to the bourgeoisie.
• SELF-ALIENATION
4 Types of Alienation from the process of
Alienation production. The worker feels controlled
and is not able to express their own
creativity in the workplace, yet cannot
quit their job since this is their only
means of economic survival. In turn, the
restricting, isolating, and repetitive
working conditions they are under
psychologically tortures them.
• MAN’S SEPARATION FROM
HIS SPECIES-BEING
Alienation from man’s purpose .
When a person works only for
money and food rather than
working because they love what
they do, it removes them from their
4 Types of species-being.
Alienation • INDIVIDUAL FROM OTHER
INDIVIDUALS
Alienation from man’s
community. When we are alienated
from our labor, job, and our
humanity-- we eventually alienate
ourselves from other people as
well.
CLASS STRUGGLE
• Class Struggle is a theory developed by Karl Marx where
he believed that the two economic classes: the Haves (The
Bourgeoisie) and the Have-Nots (The Proletarians) had
always been divided from each other since the beginning of
history.
• He believes that the working class will inevitably  turn on
the upper class and start a revolution in their favor which
will birth a society where no classes exist; everyone is
equal no matter what their socioeconomic status is.
