DRAMA
Drama is another word for a play. It is a composition
in prose form that presents a story entirely told in
dialogue and action and written with the intention of
its eventual performance.
ELEMENTS OF
DRAMA
SETTING

Setting identifies the time and place in which the


events occur.
CHARACTERS

Characters are the people in the play and thus


considered as the principal material in a drama.
DIALOGUE

A written or spoken conversational exchange


between two or more characters.
PLOT
Plot lays out the series of events that form entirety
of the play. It serves as a structural framework
which brings the events to a cohesive form and
sense.

Two Types of Plot:


1. Natural Plot
2. Episodic Plot
THEME

Theme is considered as the unifying element


that defines the dramatized idea of the play.
STYLE
Style refers to the mode of expressions
or presentation of the play which
points out the playwright’s position or
viewpoint in life.
FOUR MAJOR
TYPES OF DRAMA
Comedy is a type of drama intended to interest and amuse the
audience rather than make them deeply concerned about events
that happen. The characters overcome some difficulties, but they
always overcome their ill fortune and find happiness in the end.

Subgenres of comedy:
Farce
Romantic comedy
Satirical comedy
Black comedy
Tragedy - is based on darker themes,
tragedies portray serious subjects like death,
disaster and human suffering in dignified and
thought provoking way.
Tragicomedy - is a play that does not
adhere strictly to the structure of
tragedy. This is usually serious play that
also has some of the qualities of
comedy. It arouses thought even with
laughter.
Melodrama - is a story or plot
that focuses on the struggle of good
versus evil, and eventually leads to
the hero defeating the villain.
