Course Objectives
• This course aims to develop students’ knowledge and skills
in writing a systematic and thorough research proposal
for their final year research project.
• Students are trained to identify original research topic,
formulate problem statement and research
questions/hypotheses; to synthesise previous literature;
and to adopt an appropriate research strategy to answer
their research questions/hypotheses.
• Students are also trained to plan their research report
based on their research proposal.

Learning Outcomes
• Students are expected to be able to:
 Identify sociological and anthropological issues for
systematic enquiry.
 Identify research problem(s), research objective(s),
research questions/hypotheses and research method.
 Apply relevant theory and/or concept applicable for the
subject matter.
 To present the above in a systematically written proposal
and make adjustment according to feedback.
 To present research proposal using oral and visual
communications.

Scopes of this Course


• The scopes of this course include:
 The purposes of writing a research proposal.
 Writing an introduction to a research proposal.
 Formulating problem statements, research objectives and
research questions.
 Writing a literature review.
 Selecting an appropriate research strategy: quantitative or
qualitative approach.
 Ethical considerations.
 Tips in writing a good research proposal.
 Planning a research report.

Teaching and Supervision


• The teaching and learning activities will take the following
forms:

2. Self-learning through reading materials on
eLearning@pppjj
3. Video conference
4. Presentation and supervision meetings during Intensive
course

Assessment
• Students’ performances are assessed according to their
course work (100%). There is no test or final exam.
• The final grade is determined according to students’
achievement in their course work.
• Refer Academic Planner for more information on course
work submission requirements and deadlines.

• The final research proposal will become the proposal of


your final year research project.
• Therefore, make sure you choose your topic carefully and
start planning for your final year project NOW!

Planning Your Study


• Students are encouraged to:
 Log into eLearning@pppjj at least once a fortnight to
check for the latest teaching materials or information.
 Spend at least 2 hours a week to read and write (and
rewrite) your draft research proposal.
 Contact course manager for advice and feedback on your
draft research proposal.
 Plan your research proposal/project for 2 years from
NOW.
Failing to plan is planning to fail!
