Assignment on Design Thinking

Challenge: The story telling is the great tool for understanding the problem
among a diverse group of stakeholders before attempting to identify and define
possible solutions to the problem. We are making the structure products which
are in huge quantity ~16000+ components and we are dispatching to various
customer by road transport. Our plant team facing the problem of untraced job
material after painting and blasting resulting delayed the job as well as conflict
between production, painting and logistic team. When we have done the Why-
Why analysis to find the root cause of the problem. We found two root cause of
the problem which resulting said problem. One is wrong stenciling on the job due
to that wrong material was dispatched to the customer and second is wrong
interpretation of mark no by logistic person due to that wrong material
dispatched to customer.

Application: After understanding the problem from different stakeholder, we will

from the team from different department and sit together to solve the problem.
Team proposed different ideas using process flow diagram, also using different
visualization and also write the pros and cons for the Idea. Idea has been
discussed among the team members and finalized the best one from that Idea.
After that we have created the process flow diagram of the solution, validated
and created the prototype for the solution. Kindly refer below process flow
diagram for the solution of said problem.

We have created the online dispatch tracking system using the barcode system to
avoid the wrong material dispatch to the customer. We have used said system for
one project as part of proof of concept and whatever bugs observed during POC,
we have corrected before implementation for the entire solution.

Insight and Approach: What I have learned from conducting this exercise with
several groups is that while the graphic – especially the revised graphic that
incorporates their feedback – is important for reinforcing their understanding of
the problem they are working to solve, the more valuable aspect of the activity is
the shared insights and shared learning that occurs while they are working to
define their problem space. The brainstorming session and visualization tools
gives the diverse group of stakeholders a focal point for discussion that allows
them to share their perspectives and develop insights into potential root causes
of their problems. While they could create the graphic from a blank slate in a
collaborative manner, starting with a straw man jump starts the conversation for
them. They can quickly identify where they are in the graphic – or if they are
missing – and can more quickly gain new insights about relationships between key
entities instead of taking time to identify them. They can also identify variables in
the problem space – that is, it helps them to identify what they don’t know, in
what areas they need to obtain information or data to provide the values for the
variables. Since I discovered that the most valuable aspect is the shared insights
and learning, next time I would use the visualization activity as a starting point for
a series of design thinking activities. Then the revised graphic that incorporates
their combined feedback can serve as a reference tool throughout the remainder
of their work.
