Geographers explore both the physical properties of Earth’s surface and the human societies spread across it. In Greek, geo means “earth” and -graphy means “to write.” Because the study of geography is so broad, the discipline is typically divided into specialties. At the broadest level, geography is divided into physical geography, human geography, geographic techniques, and regional geography. 1. Physical Geography The natural environment is the primary concern of physical geographers, although many physical geographers also look at how humans have altered natural systems Physical geographers study Earth’s seasons, climate, atmosphere, soil, streams, landforms, and oceans. 2. Human Geography Human geography is concerned with the distribution and networks of people and cultures on Earth’s surface. 3.Geographic Techniques Specialists in geographic techniques study the ways in which geographic processes can be analyzed and represented using different methods and technologies. 4.Regional Geography Regional geographers take a somewhat different approach to specialization, directing their attention to the general geographic characteristics of a region.
