INTRODUCTION
Hydrophobicity comes from the greekword
• Hydro (water)
• Phobicity (fear).

It refers to the physical property of a material that repelswater (Waxes, oil and fats)

Contact angle:
• Hydrophilic θ < 90

• Hydrophobic θ > 90
• Super hydrophobic θ > 150

HYDROPHOBIC COATING
The process of coating the surface of a material with hydrophobic
material in order to avoid sticking of liquids on that surface.
INTRODUCTION

o Acid hydrolysis, with sulfuricacid generally, is used to remove most amorphous

fractions of cel-lulose to prepare CNCs
o The negatively charged surfaces of CNCs result in stable colloidal suspensions
of CNC in water. The abundant hydroxyl groups on CNC surfaces make it a
highlyhydrophilic material, which often impairs its excellent properties
INTRODUCTION

o The main challenge with chemical

functionalization to CNCs is to select
anappropriate method (surface modification
that wouldnot impact the distinctive
properties of CNCs)
o The preparation of modified CNCs with
intact properties by using “sustainable
chemistry” based strategy is still challenging
in nanocellulose research
INTRODUCTION

o Vegetable oil, a triglyceride, is a promising

renewable resource and after
transesterification reaction with an alcohol
(commonlymethanol) the fatty acid methyl
ester (FAME) is produced.
o FAME could be chemically bonded to CNCs
by the second transesterification reaction
between the hydroxyl(OH) groups and FAME.
