NATURE OF MANAGEMENT FUNCTIONS

▪ Management is a set of activities (including planning,


organizing, leading, and controlling) directed at an
organization's resources (human, financial, physical,
and information) with the aim of achieving
organizational goals in an efficient and effective
manner.

They were initially identified as five functions by


Henri Fayol in the early 1900s. Over the years,
Fayol's functions were combined and reduced to
the following four main functions of management:
planning, organizing, leading, and controlling.
PLANNING: determining courses of action

-is the most basic or primary function of

management. It is basically deciding in advance,

what is to be done; when to be done and by

whom it is to be done.
ORGANIZING: Coordinating activities and resources

-is grouping activities and resources in a logical


fashion. This one will help everyone to do task
smoothly and well organized activities especially
in school activities. The process of organizing
consist of following steps:

1. Determining and defining activities to achieve goal.


2. Grouping of activities into convenient and logical group.
3. Assigning duties to people at various levels.
4. Delegating authority to people at different level.
5. Defining and fixing responsibility for performance.
LEADING: Managing people
is the set of processes used to get people to work
together to advance the interests of the organization.
For example in school event the school head should be
the one leading his/her teachers and pupils and other
stakeholders to have a well-organized and perfect
event.

Leading must consist of issuing orders and


instructions, supervision of work, motivation,
communication with employees, leadership or
influencing the behavior of employees.
CONTROLLING: Monitoring and evaluating
activities
-is monitoring the progress of the organization as it works
toward its goals to ensure that it is effectively and efficiently
achieving these goals. It consist of establishing standards for
measurement of performance, measuring performance and
comparing with standard, finding reasons for variation among
different employee’s performance, taking correction action for
attainment of goal.
