WHAT IS HISTORY?

History  is the study of the past. "History" is an umbrella term comprising

past events as well as the memory, discovery, collection, organization,
presentation, and interpretation of these events. Historians seek
knowledge of the past using historical sources such as written documents,
oral accounts, art and material artifacts, and ecological markers.

History also includes the academic discipline which uses narrative to

describe, examine, question, and analyze past events, and investigate their
patterns of cause and effect. Historians often debate which narrative best
explains an event, as well as the significance of different causes and effects.
Historians also debate the nature of history as an end in itself, as well as its
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HISTORY
AND PRE HISTORY
The main difference between history and
prehistory is the existence of records; history is
the recorded events of the past whereas
Prehistory is the time before writing was
introduced .Events before the invention of writing
systems are considered prehistory.
History can be generally defined as the past, and
how past relates to the human lives.
WHY IS THERE A NEED TO DIVIDE
HISTORY INTO DIFFERENT FIELDS?

Within a particular area, over a limited span of

time, a certain aspect of the life of society can
have a distinct history to a considerable degree
independent of other things happening in the
same society.
History is a complex and vast subject and it
therefore needs to divided into many fields and
subcategories so that none of the aspects get left
out and one can study all of it properly in detail.
ASPECTS OF HISTORICAL EXPERIENCES:
• Not only history is divided chronologically and
geographically, but some fields of history also
study specific subjects of Human culture , such
as:
Political Economic
history history

Cultural
Social and
history intellectua
l history
POLITICAL HISTORY

• Political history: political history can be further

subdivided into diplomatic and military history, it
concentrates on government and ruler.
ECONOMIC HISTORY

• Economic history: it includes all the activities

involved in producing goods and services- like:
agriculture,trade,transportation,technology etc
SOCIAL HISTORY
• Social history: social history is more
amorphous, it includes the history of social
institutions and relationships of typical
conditions and customs, popular beliefs and
movements
CULTURAL AND INTELLECTUAL HISTORY

• Cultural and intellectual history: this aspect

concentrates on the individual work of the
leading scholars and artists. It also talks about
religion,education,science, literature and
philosophy.
CONCLUSION

• Recent historical work has shifted emphasis from political history(which

prevailed till the late 19th century) to socioeconomic and cultural-intellectual
history.
• For example: there is a rise in interest in urban history and ethnic history
(particularly black history) in the united states.
• All aspects of history are interdependent on each other and all different aspects
of history are facets of human behavior and of the web of social life and hence
the character of each aspect of life is bound to be affected by what is happening
on the other levels.
