Objectives:

• Students will be able to learn the

different sources of energy.
• Able to differentiate Non Renewable vs.
Renewable Resources.
• How can we protect the environment
by knowing the alternatives.
• Know the advantages and
disadvantages of this resources.
NONRENEWABLE
AND
RENEWABLE
RESOURCES
HMMMM....
What do you think
nonrenewable
resources are?

Nonrenewable?
Resource?
NONRENEWABLE RESOURCES

A nonrenewable resource is a natural

resource that cannot be re-made or re-
grown at a scale comparable to its
consumption.
COAL, PETROLEUM, AND GAS
Coal, petroleum, and
natural gas are
considered
nonrenewable because
they cannot be
replenished in a short
period of time. These
are called fossil fuels.
HOW IS COAL MADE ???
Uses of Coal
• Uses for Electricity Generation, Steel
Production and as Liquid Fuel.
• Steam Coal (Thermal Coal) – Power
Generation.
• Coking Coal (Metallurgical Coal) –
Steel Production.
Types of Coal
Lignite (Brown Coal) - (25%-35%)
Sub Bituminous – (35% - 45%)
Bituminous – (45% - 86%)
Anthracite (Hard Coal) – (86% - 97%)
Environmental Concerns
• Mining Practice
• Ecological Impact
• Human Safety
Coal Produces Carbon Dioxide, S, Hg, N
& Heavy Metals.
Health PRIORITY
Development of Carbon Capture and
Storage.
HOW ARE OIL AND GAS MADE ???

HMMMM....
If nonrenewable
resources are resources
that cannot be re-made
at a scale comparable to
its consumption, what
are renewable resources?
RENEWABLE RESOURCES
Renewable resources are
natural resources that can be
replenished in a short period
of time.
