TOPIC: LEARNER CENTERED AND
TEACHER CENTERED
Outline

 Learner centered curriculum

 Teacher centered curriculum
 Learner vs. teacher centered curriculum
Learner centered

 Learner Centered curriculum the center of interest is

the learner. The students are given more importance
in this type of curriculum design .
. Most of the education experts and educational
psychologists are in favor of this learner centered
curriculum. First of all Rousseau emphasized that
education should be according to the interests of the
child .
Principles of Students Centered
Curriculum

 Freedom to develop naturally

 The teacher role is that of a guide
 Interest is the motive of all work
 Scientific study of pupil development
 Co-operation between the school and home to meet
the needs of child-life
Elements of Learner-centered
Approach:

 Learner’s interest
 Focus on effect
 Teaching
 Learning environment
 Teacher as facilitator
 Playful atmosphere
 Freedom of movement
Cont....

 Assessment
 Learner initiated
 Growth oriented
 Formative emphasis
 Focus on the individual
 Personal growth and development
Features& characteristics of
learner centered approach

 This type of curriculum gives importance to learner

and considers child as the centre of interest which is
the most natural approach.
 The interest of the child is the most important factor
in the process of teaching and learning. This factor is
highly emphasized in this type-of curriculum.
 Itis a method of teaching that shifts the focus of
instruction from teacher to the student.
Cont....

 Itfocuses on skills that enable lifelong learning and

independent problem-solving.
 In this approach, learners construct their own
understanding from what they are exposed to in the
classroom and what they have experienced in the rest
of their lives.
Cont...

 Todevelop learner centered curriculum, the teacher

needs to view learners as active inquirers who use
previous experiences (both mental and social) to
make meaning of the world.
Advantages of learner centered
approach:

 Itrecognizes the social and cultural context of the

learner
 Learners have the freedom to choose the curriculum
 Students needs are reflected in the classroom and in
what they study.
 Itcreates a direct link between class work and the
learner’s needs.
 It encourages learners persistence.
Cont....

 Learners can easily learn and practice new skills in

day to day activities.
 Students see their needs clearly reflected in the
classroom, which is very motivating.
 Itcreates a direct link between class work and the
learner’s needs.
 Learners can easily transfer new skills in day to
day activities.
Disadvantages of learner centered
approach:

 Learning depends on the teacher’s ability to provide

the necessary resources.
 It
requires more skill on the part of the teacher as
well as their time and resources.
 Itis often difficult for teachers to make an
acceptable balance among competing needs and
interests of students.
 It is both time consuming and expensive.
Cont....

 It
often relies on the teacher’s ability to create
materials appropriate to learner’s expressed needs.
 It
requires more skill on the part of the teacher as
well as their time and resources.
 Itis often difficult for teachers to make an acceptable
balance among competing needs and interests of
students
Teacher centered Curriculum:

 In teacher centered curriculum design, the teacher is the

center of interest. This type of curriculum emphases the
involvement of the teacher in the curriculum
development. Teacher plays an important role in the
development of the student.
 Refers to learning situation in which the teacher asserts
control over the material that students and the ways in
which they study it. i.e. when, where, how and what pace
they learn it.
Roles of teachers:

 Implementers
 Adapters
 Developers
 Researchers
 To review the curriculum.
 To evaluate the curriculum.
Characteristics of teacher-based
curriculum:

 The teacher is the center of knowledge and in charge

of learning.
 Students are usually passively receiving information.
 The instructor’s role is to be primary information
giver and primary evaluator.
 Students are viewed as “empty vessels” who
passively receive knowledge from their teachers.
Cont...

 Teachers and professors act as the sole supplier of

knowledge, and under the direct instruction model,
teachers often utilize systematic, scripted lesson
plans.
 Teacher Centered Instruction is fairly low-tech, often
relying on the use of textbooks and workbooks
instead of computers
Advantages of Teacher’s centered
Approach

 The classroom remains orderly.

 Students are quiet as the teacher presents new information
and lead the activities
 Teachers retain full control of the classroom and its
activities.
 The teacher is an effective model of the target language.
 The teacher is an important source of information on how
the learners are doing.

Disadvantages of Curriculum

 Students don’t learn to collaborate with other students

missing opportunities to share what they have learned.
 Student don’t use their communication skills.
 This type of instruction can be boring for students.
 Teacher-centered education doesn’t allow students to
express themselves and direct their own learning
Cont...

 Teacher-Centered Instruction doesn’t empower learner’s

autonomous study-skills and subsequently lifelong
learning skills.
 Teacher-centered learning most often doesn’t address the
importance of open inquiry.
 A changein the attitude on the part of learners, teachers
and community is difficult to develop.
 Itwill become difficult to maintain a common standard in
various institutions.
Teacher vs learner
Teacher Learner

Encourages to student to Where student and educator

completely focus on educator share an equal focus

Focus is on language forms and Focus is on language use in

structures (what the instructor typical situations (how students
knows about the language) will use the language)

another
Teacher Learner

Classroom is often noisy and

Classroom is quiet

Focus on the teacher Both teacher and learner have
an equal focus

expressing themselves and to acquire knowledge
discourages them from independently and
asking question and logical logically by asking

Conclusion:

 In conclusion, the main difference between teacher

centered and learner centered approach is that, within
teacher centered approach, the focus is on the teacher,
and such a classroom does not encourage student
expression and communication, while learner centered
classroom shares its focus equally between the teacher
and the learner, further permitting collaboration,
communication, and self-expression of learners .
