The document describes the operation of an air compressor under different conditions:
1) When running loaded, the inlet valve opens allowing compressed air to be produced as pressure rises in the oil separator and fully opens the inlet valve.
2) When running unloaded, the inlet valve closes to reduce power consumption and the oil separator blows down air to lower noise levels.
3) The compressor has an automatic start-stop mechanism where it will stop after a preset time if no air is needed, and restart when system pressure reaches the minimum loading pressure.

Compressor running loaded means that the inlet valve is open and the compressor is producing compressed air. As the compressor starts and the motor switches from star to delta connection, the control valve (1) of the inlet valve activates. A partial vacuum is formed in the suction line, the inlet valve opens a bit, and the compressor starts delivering. As the pressure rises in the oil separator, the inlet valve is fully opened by the increasing pressure above the piston, and the compressor starts running at full capacity.
Compressor runnig unloaded
Compressor runnig unloaded means that the inlet valve is closed and the compressor is not producing compressed air. To decrease power consumption, the oil separator is blown down. As soon as the discharge pressure reaches the set maximum, solenoid valve (1) opens the passage along the inlet valve piston, and the spring closes the valve plate. At the same time, solenoid valve (2) starts oil separator blow down. Solenoid valve (2) directs some of the blow down air back to the air end inlet to lower the otherwise high level of noise caused by an unloaded compressor.
Automatic start-stop mechanism
If no compressed air is needed, the controller stops the compressor after a pre-set time. As soon as the system pressure reaches the set minimum (=loading pressure), the compressor restarts automatically. Off Load On Load
