On-Demand
Manufacturing

On-demand manufacturing, rather than

What is it? fabricating parts with large minimum
order quantities and storing those goods
in inventory, is built around producing
only what customers need when they
need it.
Challenges Associated with Traditional
Manufacturing
● Supply chains built to support the demands of large businesses rather than
small businesses and niche consumer demands.

● Facilities often located overseas, which can complicate communication and

lengthen order fulfillment times.

● Minimum order requirements (MOQ) and lead times can be prohibitively high
and long, respectively.

● It can take six to 12 months to design, create, test, approve and manufacture
products.

● It’s very easy to overproduce, which saddles companies with costly overstock
in warehouses.
On demand manufacturing is the agile response to the limitations of traditional
manufacturing, and we’ll likely see even more of a push toward forecasting and
production on demand in the coming days.

Advantages : Rapid turnaround time on quotes - instantaneously or
in a short time after upload of CAD model
● Dramatic reduction in lead time.
● Reduced supply chain overhead - using an on-demand
platform allows the buyers to avoid the expense of
setting up a supply chain.
● Standardized quality control processes across all
suppliers in the network.
Production Volume :
● For sustained production at higher volumes, it may be
best to seek out a more traditional contract
manufacturer.
Supply Chain Control :
● If very tight supply chain control is desired for the
Drawbacks : development of critical parts, it may be best to consider
manufacturing those parts either in-house or to directly
outsource the production to a supplier with whom a
close, direct relationship can be developed and
maintained.
Service availability :
● there can be differences in the range and depth of
services available from on-demand platforms, depending
on the manufacturing stage involved, so it is important
when choosing a platform to select one that can provide
the needed capabilities.
How On-Demand Manufacturing is
used in Automotive Services

● The on-demand model allows rapid prototyping which helps

manufacturers to cut down lead times for designing cars or updating
current models.

● Manufacturers can leverage manufacturing by testing a variety of

prototypes before production.

● 3D printing services allow the fabrication of customized tools which help

save up to 58% in overall cost and reduce project time by 92%.
Flexible Production System
Flexible manufacturing systems are essential to making small-batch production for
mass customization profitable. The automotive industry has been at the forefront of
building this flexibility.

Ford and General Motors have invested in dynamically programmable robotics with
interchangeable tooling that can switch agilely between models and variants with no
loss of efficiency.

The advent of 3-D printing is truly changing the way we think of manufacturing. These
flexible devices can print objects with materials such as ceramics, metals, and even
chocolate.

We expect many more innovative concepts and processes to blossom that accelerate
the cost-effective production of customized goods.
Mass
Customization

The ability of a company to deliver modified goods and products to

fulfil the needs of individual customers.

The customized products are provided at the same price as of the

number of mass production products.
4 Types of Mass Customization

● Collaborative Customization

● Adaptive Customization

● Cosmetic Customization

● Transparent Customization
Collabrative customization
● Firms talk to individual customers to determine the precise product
offering that best serves the customer's needs

● Example - Tailored suits; Converse lets consumers chose the color or

pattern of every element of certain types of shoes, either in-store or
online.

Adaptive customization
● Firms produce a standardized product, but this product is customizable
in the hands of the end-user

● Example - Lutron lights, which are programmable so that customers can

easily customize the aesthetic effect.
Transparent customization
● Firms provide individual customers with unique products, without
explicitly telling them that the products are customized.

● Example - Google AdWords and AdSense

Cosmetic customization
● Firms produce a standardized physical product, but market it to different
customers in unique ways.

● Example - Soft Drink served in: A can, 1.25L bottle, 2L bottle.
