Recycling
 Recycling is the process of converting waste materials into new materials and objectives.
 It is an alternative to “conventional” waste disposal that can save material and help lower greenhouse gas emissions.
Why is recycling is important for the environment?

By reducing air and water pollution and

saving energy, recycling offers an important
environmental benefit it reduces emissions of
greenhouse gase such as;
 Carbon Dioxide
 Methane
 Nitrous Oxide and Chlorofluorocarbons
that contribute to global climate change.
What is recycling and
examples?
 The basic phases in recycling are the
collection of waste materials, their
processing or manufacture into new
products, and the purchase of those
products, which may then themselves
be recycled.
 Typical materials that are recycled
include iron and steel scrap, aluminum
cans, glass bottles, papers, woods, and
plastics.
Recycling process

 While the recycling process differs by

commodity and locality, there are essentially
three main steps; collection, processing, and
manufacturing into a new product.
Collection
Recycable materials are generated by
a consumer or business and then
collected by a private hauler or
government entity.
Processing
The materials are transported by the collector to a processing
facility, such as a materials recovery facility or paper processor. At
the processing facility, the recycables are sorted, cleaned of
contaminants, and prepared for transport to a milling facility or
directly to a manufacturing facility. Some commodities may require
more processing for additional sorting and decontamination. For
example, glass and plastics reclaimers, respectively, where they are
processed into mill-ready forms.
Remanufacturing

After all necessary processing is completed, recycables are made into new
products at recycling plants or other facilities, such as paper mills or bottle
manufacturing facilities.
Recycling Plans
A recycling plan helps to organize the information necessary for a
succesful recycling program. The plan can also identify
responsibilities for implementing the program and the goals that
you would like to achieve. A recycling plan also serves as an
important reference document when things change.
