Choosing the right verb tense
First, identify the tense in the question.

‘What did you buy from the supermarket?’


simple past tense
Now answer the question using the same tense.

‘I bought some cookies.’

Using full sentences
‘Who is the most important person in
your life?’
‘My father.’

Try to answer questions in complete sentences.

‘The most important person in my life is


my father.
‘What do you do on weekends?’
‘Spend time with my friends.’

Now try to answer the question in a complete


sentence.

‘On weekends, I spend time with my friends.’


Expanding on ideas
‘What do you do on weekends?’
‘On weekends, I spend time with my friends.’

Try to expand your answers with reasons,


examples, or comparisons.
‘On weekends, I like to spend time with my friends
because we rarely see each other during the week.’
Extend your answers
• Try to answer the teacher’s questions in full. Extend your answers and don't
wait for the teacher to ask you another question.

• When your answers are short, this shows the teacher that you cannot talk in
detail about a topic.

• If the teacher says 'Why?’, she wants you to give a reason for your answer
and give more details.
