Skills
5.1 Teaching Speaking
Cont….
Speaking is a primary and productive skill of
language.
Though speaking was not given priority by
the traditional approaches, recently it is
achieved proper attention of teachers and
methodologists.
The second language students also need to
develop proper skills in speaking.
Reasons for Speaking:

To provide rehearsal opportunity

To provide feedback
To activate learners and make English
knowledge automatic
To make student autonomous
To provide input and interaction opportunities.
To provide rehearsal opportunity:
To practice real-life speaking in the
safety of classroom. (Harmer, p. 23)
We teach speaking to the students so
that they can rehearse for real
communication and ultimately be able
to communicate in English fluently.
To provide feedback:
When the students speak in the classroom,
their speech helps teacher to give
appropriate feedback to them.
Students also know how well they are
progressing in English.
Also, everyone knows success and problem
they have.
To activate learners and make
English knowledge automatic :
Learner activation through various speaking
activities helps to make the learning more
effective and automatic.
Learners are fluent and competent in other
aspects such as vocabulary and grammar too.
To make student autonomous :
Students have to speak several times make
them responsible for their own learning.
Because of speaking activities, they are
encouraged to become active and autonomous
through English lessons.
To provide input and interaction
opportunities :
Students get opportunity for interaction which
is taken as the most essential process of second
language learning.
Due to speaking activities, they get more
‘roughly-tuned input from their teachers and
other speakers.’
